This video shows myself, my mother, and my grandmother draping a saree, encapsulating the passing down of traditions. Each woman has a different relationship and level of comfort with the garment. My grandmother, who has been wearing a saree every day for over 5 decades, has not only an ease but also a sense of nonchalance with the saree that my mother does not. My mother wears sarees only on special occasions and thus is competent and more elaborate with her draping, while I am completely out of my depth and just giddy to be doing this for maybe the first time!

The saree I am draping is a piece I made titled Chores and Joys (2023). It has Lino prints and embroidery (inspired by my grandmother’s life).

This film was made in May 2023.
